Derek, also known as "Big D," is a force to be reckoned with, both on and off the court.
Derek started playing racquetball when he was 8 years old. His Dad introduced him to the game and Derek got involved playing tournaments right away. In fact, at 9 years old, he won his first Junior Regional and won a free trip to Memphis, TN to play the Junior Nationals, winning a bronze medal.
Derek played all through school and into college. His game was so impressive he was offered and accepted a full scholarship to Southwest Missouri State University. He majored in Communications/Public Relations and minored in General Business. During Derek's college career, he won the Intercollegiate Championships three times and was a 3-time All American('91, '93, '94).
After his billiant college career, Derek made a big splash with the USRA (United States Racquetball Association). He won the gold medal at the 1994 Olympic Festival and was on the U.S. Team that took the gold at the 1995 World Championships and Pan American Games. 1996 was a good year for Derek, taking home the gold medal at the National Doubles Championships and the bronze medal at the National Singles Championships.
Derek is one of the best players to ever play the game. Consistently a top ranked player over his 10 year career, Derek also conducts exhibition/clinics where he raises thousands of dollars annually for junior racquetball organizations in over 40 states.
An excellent teacher and clinician, Derek loves to golf and spend time outdoors. He currently resides in Colorado with his wife Tina and two children.
